organs, fondue and Greek Festivals all in a days work

The last weekend of summer went well – Friday and Saturday were spent in Portland for the wedding!  Everything went well – Meaghan and I played with an organist at the beautiful Old Church in SW Portland – the acoustics were phenomenal and the wedding was beautiful.  I love this type of performance opportunity – let’s hope there are more to come soon!

And if this wasn’t enough, yet another reason to love Portland…FONDUE!!

Probably the best Fondue of my life was consumed this past Friday evening on 21st…

Next weekend:

I’ll Tap That

Who: YOU!

What: UNICEF Tap Project, PDX edition – donate $1 on your restaurant tab to help save lives with clean drinking water

Where: Any PDX participating restaurant

When: March 16th – March 22nd, 2009

Why: By merely adding $1 to your restaurant tab, a child will have clean drinking water and be able to live for 40 more days – how much easier can it get??

After learning about the UNICEF Tap Project during a visit from BBH‘s Kevin Roddy this past year, and again during a visit to Droga 5, I can’t help but to love this campaign.

Thank you W+K12 for helping to make this happen in PDX!

love hate relationships

My most recent love-hate relationship: election 2008.  I love politics, always have and always will, but the same reasons I love it are the same reasons I hate it.

Although I have strong opinions about hot topics such as politics, religion, gay marriage, taxes, euthanasia, diversity and affirmative actions, as you might have noticed, I rarely discuss or comment on these topics.

I’ve also deleted this information from my facebook – I’ve always thought it funny that people label themselves within such broad and open-ended categories: “Christian” “Liberal” “Catholic” “Very Conservative” etc.  All of these areas are so complex; however, people are ok with classifying their entire belief system/politics views into one word categories.

Before eliminating completely, I had written under these categories “that involves a conversation” – it said this for a year of so…how many people do you think actually asked me opinions on these topics?  That’s right- a whopping zero.  Sure, one of two people tried to get it out of me over the internet, but actually taking the time to sit down and ask someone else about how they feel of the most important issues affecting our world – heaven forbid this happen.

The reason I raise this issue is because of a recent phone.  A man from a local Salem, Oregon organization in support of Barack Obama called.  Here’s a summarized recap of our conversation:

Man: Hello, my name is Mike so and so and I am calling to let you know that I am in strong support of and will be voting for Barack Obama in the upcoming election.

Me: Why are you supporting Obama?

Man: I like his ideas about taxes and health care.

Me: What specifically do you like about them and why is it better than McCain‘s proposals?

Man: …pause…he has some great ideas that will bring change to the White House…!  Anyway, I just want to let you know that I strongly support Obama and I hope you do too.  Will you be voting for Obama in this election?

Me:  That is not a question I can answer yes or no to at this point.  Both candidates have positive and negative attributes and I cannot give you an answer without discussing the issues.

Man:  …well, I am sorry to hear you are not in 100% support of Obama.  I know I can tell you I will be I am and will be in support of Obama come election day.

….

I think you get the picture.  Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not calling Obama out because I like McCain better (or perhaps I do, I guess you’ll never know unless we talk).  The point is, I think it’s ironic this man called me with the main purpose to tell me about his plan.  Especially as I acted on the fence as to my political decisions, it would have been an opportune time for him to understand my point of view and how he could sway my vote.  Did he try?  No.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why I love and hate politics.  HOWEVER, once again, something that could be really great is compromised.

Sigh.
