going back back back to Salem Salem Salem

As of yesterday, I have officially completed my internship at API…yay! [yay as in, I made it!, not yay as in, thank god I'm finished! (; ]

Last night I was joking that I’m currently in API purgatory as I have officially finished my internship but won’t official begin as a real employee until the beginning of January. So…I will be spending my metaphorical purgatory time back home in OREGON! yay! I love pretty much everything about my situation in Austin, but I am so so so so so excited to have a few weeks with friends and family.

So…to bring this full circle (or maybe 180…), I came across this video as I was organizing my comp. this morning. It’s too easy to take things/people/etc. for granted when you have them, agreed? Well, as I was watching this video of my amazing mother playing the piano, I was thinking…man, I am so lucky to have such great parents and wow, I really do miss coming home at night after work/school/home for a weekend to either hear this or play along with her.

I will be the first to admit, I get far too distracted by technology / Internet / work / school / projects etc. … can’t help that, it’s just who I am and how I roll. HOWEVER, I’m excited to try to remove myself from those things as much as possible and really focus on people and first-hand experiences this winter break. Work and school is very important, but so is finding the balance between that as well as fun/relationships/people, etc. (p.s. I hope this isn’t starting to sound like a self-help emo blog…god. lol)

So, yes, check out my mom. She is freaking bomb.com:

joining some bands + finding a balance

So…I’m not sure if I’m mentioned my musical endeavors here in Austin…probably not. So, long story short, I wanted to join a group and started checking out Austin dorchestras. Then I decided, what the hell, I’m in Austin doing something completely different with my life than what had been originally planned, might as well branch out and try something different with my musical ventures.

So, I’ve been playing with some bands…! Go figure, right? I love it!

The first band I would describe as a more traditional rock band, the second more of a Ben Folds / power pop / indie rock style, and the third group is a combo between funk / jazz / and acoustic. Random, right? Perhaps, but it’s been a crazy awesome experience.

Not to make this post myspace.com emo; however, I often think about the irony that the majority of my friends/acquaintances at UO had/have no idea I have even an ounce of musical knowledge/ability/interest. Guess that’s what happens when you (I) turn life into 190% work and -40% play, right? (= I’m working on finding the balance…slowly but surely! (I think).

Anyway, back to being non-emo…I feel like I definitely have the orchestra / quartet / classical routine down pretty well, but playing with bands has been quite the experience – let’s just say I have been quickly learning an entirely different skill set through playing with bands rather than orchestras. …and it’s been AWESOME!

I have more to write about this later (shocker) but I felt a quick burst of (extra) enthusiasm when I came across The Morakestra’s MySpace and saw my name there. Made me feel official. Woot.
