A Quick Trip To Portland
So, I got back from Argentina on Monday, we left for Portland four days later. Arrived into PDX quite late, took the Max, grabbed a quick bite to eat and CRASHED. We were so tired and needed to re-charge for the next day!
Saturday! It was such a beautiful day – I guess it was the first day of sunshine after 327 years of drizzly gray cloudy skies, meaning EVERYONE was outside. It reminded me of that 1st “warm” (60 degrees) sunny day at UO. the population of students on campus seemed to quadrupled as everyone was outside, literally just sitting there on the lawns/benches/sidewalks/patios/anywhere, soaking in the sunshiney goodness.
ANYWAY, we began the day off with breakfast at Mother’s. I had the best reuben sandwich of my life:
David had a pretty bomb.com waffle:
After breakfast, we walked down to the Saturday market! It’s funny how you don’t do certain (really awesome) things when you live in a place…I suppose the novelty isn’t quite there…but still! I had almost forgotten how awesome the Portland Saturday Market was…hadn’t been since I was a kid!
Lots of hand-made stuff, art, food, solid people watching, and the heart in Oregon sticker booth!!!
Also passed this guy. Oh, Portlanders:
Jamison Square Park. Like a said…first sunny day and people come out of the woodworks:
Passed one of the Portland Loos (a series of solar-paneled public toilets in the downtown area):
Got on the street car a few blocks later (have I yet mentioned how much I love Portland public transportation?? Austin…take note!). Anyway, a stop after we got on, a lady got on the street car pulling a basket…with two poodle looking dogs. Interesting:
How can you not love downtown Portland?
Burgers! Some of you might be aware of my mild obsession with hamburgers – we ate here at Little Big Burger and it was pretty good.
However, the real reason for taking this picture, the man wearing a ninja turtle backpack:
Anyway, spent the evening Saturday and all day Sunday with family & friends. By Monday, we were already back on a plane to Austin! Short but solid weekend.
I’ll Tap That
Who: YOU!
What: UNICEF Tap Project, PDX edition – donate $1 on your restaurant tab to help save lives with clean drinking water
Where: Any PDX participating restaurant
When: March 16th – March 22nd, 2009
Why: By merely adding $1 to your restaurant tab, a child will have clean drinking water and be able to live for 40 more days – how much easier can it get??
After learning about the UNICEF Tap Project during a visit from BBH‘s Kevin Roddy this past year, and again during a visit to Droga 5, I can’t help but to love this campaign.
Thank you W+K12 for helping to make this happen in PDX!

words of widsom from James Rice
This past Friday was the interns last official Friday work session – this week we used the space of Coates Kokes! Coates Kokes was wonderful – accommodating, friendly, hospitable, etc. From the time I was there, I got a good feeling about the company, culture, values, culture, collaboration, ambiance, etc. Of course I’d have to spend more time there to know for sure, but overall – good experience!
James Rice and Mason West from Ascentium as well as Amber Case and Bram Pitoyo spent some time with each team in the afternoon – specifically, James spoke to us regarding presentation as our final pitch is this Friday.
Some advice James had regarding pitching to clients:
- Remember to not talk over the client’s head – you know this stuff inside and out, but do they?
- Be organized!
- Own the room – you’ve done the research and put the time in – now own it!
- Be passionate – live it! love it!
- Find a way to people to think uniquely
- Scared/nervous? Get over it! be proud of you strategy / work
- Don’t increase # of slides to decrease bullets per page…
- Make it as real and engaging for the client as possible
